Domainz DIY Web Site Builder Help Guide

How do I link a document in the DIY Builder?

To link documents, like a PDF document, into your Domainz Premier Hosting so people can open them from your website you need to complete the following instructions:Part 1 - Transferring your documents to your hosting package via an FTP program.

1) Connect to you Premier Hosting package using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.   We recommend Filezilla which is downloadable from the Domainz website by clicking this link: http://www.domainz.net.nz/downloads/filezilla.zip.   There is also a use guide available by clicking on: http://www.domainz.gen.nz/filezillaUserGuide.pdf

2) Create a folder in the root of your hosting directory called "documents" (without the speech marks ["]).    Open this directory by double clicking on the "documents" folder

3) Transfer the files you wish to link into your website to this directory by navigating to them in the left hand window of Filezilla and then dragging them to the documents folder in your hosting window on the right hand side.

In the example above and directory has been created for ‘documents’ and two .pdfs have been uploaded to the directory.

4) Close your FTP program

Part 2 - Creating the links in your DIY Website builder.

1) Go to the page you would like to have this/these document(s) linked on and type the text you wish to have the link on. For example you may have an order form for people to download and print so you would put something like: "Click here for a copy of our order form" (without the speech marks ["]).

2) Highlight the word you wish to have the link attached to by holding your left mouse button down while you roll your mouse over it i.e. from the example above you might highlight the word "here".

3) Select the Hyperlink tool from the menu bar by clicking the icon that looks like a globe with a chain in the bottom right or by press the ctrl+k keys simultaneously.   A box will open for you to enter the link properties.

4) Choose the "external" link option and, in the URL box below, enter the location of the document in the form of "http://<your domain name>/documents/<your document name>" (without the speech marks ["]).   For example: if your document is called "order form.pdf" (without the speech marks ["]) and you domain name is called "mydomain.co.nz" (without the speech marks ["]) then the URL should read: "http://mydomain.co.nz/documents/order form.pdf" (without the speech marks ["]).

5) If you want this document to open in a new window then click the box called "Open in a new window" and click the bottom left button which is the ok button (you can only just see the top of the buttons due to a window size issue).Note: We recommended if you are linking to a .PDF document (or other kind of document) that you open this in a new window.

People who generally look at a document on a website tend to close the window afterwards which means they will have existed from your website.   By having this document open in a new window they will return to the window below which is your website when they close the window.
